Hi.
I wrote late last year about my Pavillion XH555 laptop with Windows XP installed. The laptop does not have a battery installed and the cord that we use for it is not the original but a replacement model that is compatible. The computer has continued to take longer and longer to turn on, sometimes after turning the switch on and off for 15 to 20 minutes, the laptop would turn on and work as usual. Now, my son says it turns on after two hours of waiting. Once it is on it runs fine, but getting it to turn on is the issue. Now, when it is started, if the cord is moved or stepped on, it will shut off and now turn on, which has just happened two days ago. It won't turn on even though you can hear the sound of something booting up and then there is silence. Do we need a new plug module or more RAM? It only has 512 MB of RAM on 1 ghz processor. I really don't know where to start on this one. ![]() myslyn |

Re: HP Pavillion XH555 start-up troubles
Hi,
First off, you need to have the DC connection checked. It is the connector where the ac adapter output plug goes into the laptop. Also have the ac output plug checked, it may be broken or the ac adapter may not be giving out the correct voltages. About the power ON issue, please clarify... when you say it takes longer... you mean you need to press the power ON button several times before you get it to turn ON (lights come up, fan spins, audible activity from HDD and CD drive)?

Re: HP Pavillion XH555 start-up troubles
When you say I need to have the DC connection checked, you mean BY someone or is there a tutorial that I can find that will tell me what I am looking for with the DC connector? And when I say that I that it takes longer, I mean that I push the switch on and off for over an hour sometimes, or I have pushed the button on, then jiggled on the plug and then it has come on The lights come up, the Windows XP screen shows and then everything is fine. There has to be something wrong with the computer booting up but I just am not sure what it is...

Re: HP Pavillion XH555 start-up troubles
If you can boot into Safe Mode, enter MSCONFIG in command prompt and disable all entries in STARTUP.... enable one then boot into Windows normally. Continue to enable each one as you get a successful reboot into Windows.

I got it to start up after waiting an hour and a half, it went to the HP screen and I tried to push the button to send it to safe mode but I didn't catch it in time because you can't tell when or if it is going to start up.
![]() It went right to the blue screen with the user32.dll message so I turned it back off. I don't want to play with it extensively if I can't recover the hard drive, which is what I am most concerned with, on this laptop. Can't it be removed and placed in a different laptop? Or is the hard drive busted? ![]() thanks... myslyn |

Re: HP Pavillion XH555 start-up troubles
Yep, best if you remove it first, connect it to another computer using a USB connected enclosure and pull your important files out. Once that done, put it back in your laptop and do a repair install of XP (you are on XP, right?). If that does not help do a reinstall of XP.

Okie dokie...that I will get right on as soon as I get the USB enclosure.
I have been able to get it to turn on and get to the boot screen and I tried to boot in Safe Mode and by Last Known Good Configuration...neither one was successful so I need to remove the important stuff and try to do a repair. Yes, I am using XP Pro, however, when I went to the Recovery Console it asked for the proverbial "admin password" but I left mine blank. It's not letting me in... So, I'll have to deal with that once I get the software and files off the laptop. Anyway, thanks for your help with this, Trigger Finger I'll let you guys know how it works out. ![]() myslyn Last edited by myslyn; 02-16-2009 at 10:58 AM. |

Re: HP Pavillion XH555 start-up troubles
Hi Trigger Finger! :-)
Got the laptop back in action yesterday by moving all important stuff off the drive, re-installing Win XP and at the screen where you are asked if you want to install Win XP, they wanted to know if I wanted to repair instead...so I was able to repair instead of completely wiping out everything! ![]() Things are back up; there were a few viruses on the drive which might have been aiding the constant operational issues. Cleaned those up and now, I can't see the LAN adapter to connect to the Internet. There's always something but I did want you to know that what I asked help for in this part of the forum has been solved. ![]() thanks again for your help on this one. :-) myslyn |

Re: HP Pavillion XH555 start-up troubles
Hey... looking good so far...
I suggest you reinstall/update ALL your drivers from HP website... that should cover new or recent updates, replacement of corrupt drivers (this may correct the missing LAN connection/internet connection problem), etc... You did good... ![]() ![]() Thanks for update.

Thanks so much...I do try to follow directions well and things are working out well, save for the LAN adapter.
I will go to the HP site and see what they have for my laptop and I'll let you know where it goes! ![]() thanks again! myslyn |

Well, I went to reinstall all of my drivers and there aren't many for this year of laptop. And now, when I went into the BIOS section, a LAN adapter doesn't even show, broken or disabled. I was told that if the ipconfig does not show any other devices, then it must be broken or missing. I know that it is NOT missing but it could be broken. ![]() Since I can only conclude that it is broken, what would you advise I should do about replacing it? We load online via wireless most of the time but it is useful to be able to via the LAN if the wireless doesn't want to work. Sorry to be a pain and still hanging around with these issues... ![]() myslyn |

Re: HP Pavillion XH555 start-up troubles
Go into Device Manager and check if you have devices there that are UNKNOWN or has red/yellow marks on them. Post a screen shot in your reply of what you see if you can.
