XP laptop startup problem

I have the exact same TPM error message in my bios startup screen on a gateway laptop running Windows Vista. Interestingly enough, my bookshelf over the computer collapsed and a heavy book fell on my system as well. I know this was the start of my problem as I instantly could not get the mouse to click on any object afterwards and so upon reboot I discovered the TPM issue. I used some third party recoverly utilities and they can not even mount the volume. My windows recovery disk is useless as well. While I dont quite understand the relationship between the harddisk problem and the TPM message I am sure they are related. I believe at this point that the shock from the falling shelf has damaged my harddrive. I would appreciate it if anyone could confirm this fear. Any ideas on how to gage the extent of the damage ? The HD did pass some high level functional diagnostics but crashed everytime when trying to diag NTFS. My computer thinks there is no harddrive. Anythoughts would be appreciated.

Re: XP laptop startup problem[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

If the system was up and running I could see it damaging the hard drive. Try reseating the hard drive

TPM stands for trusted platform module. It is a chip on the motherboard that your hard disk is mated with during building of the laptop so that if the hard drive is removed from the computer, it will remain locked and not be accessible as far as the data on it is concerned (a security measure). If the book fall damaged your TPM chip, then the computer will not boot up because the hard drive is not receiving the handshake it expects from the TPM chip and thinks it is being accessed illegally. Only the laptop manufacturer can help out in such cases I believe.
