Question HP dv9700z Keyboard Help

Hello,

I had a little mishap with the keyboard on my HP dv9700z laptop. One of the keys came off and I can't figure out how to get it back on. All of the parts seem to be here, just can't figure out how to put the key back into place. Can anyone possibly explain how to do it, or perhaps direct me to a website with instructions if at all possible? All help is highly appreciated, thank you. By the way, the key that came off is the period key. Thanks.

Re: HP dv9700z Keyboard Help

I tried that but it didn't seem to help, because I can't figure out how to get the two retainer pieces in there, rather than just one. Thanks for the link, tho :).

If the clips and retainers are still good, the key cap should just snap on back to the keyboard. However, if any of these are cracked, you need to replace the key (see eBay for this... I was able to order just a key in eBay before.. you just need to tell the seller what sort of clips and retainers you have so they can match it with something similar).

Re: HP dv9700z Keyboard Help

The retainers are still good. The problem is that I have no idea how they should be put in place because I did not purposely take the key off of the keyboard. Let's just say a wonderful dog decided to play around near the keyboard at the wrong time. So, I'm a little lost in how it all fits together to be honest. I really would like to avoid buying a new keyboard. If I have to I will just use it as is, though I would prefer to have the key and retainers put back in place.

Re: HP dv9700z Keyboard Help

I suggest you remove the key cap of the key next to it and see how the clips/retainers are assembled in place. Use that as reference and guide on how you will work on the broken one.

If you are not comfortable doing that or if you feel you will be doing more harm than good, ask a friend who knows or bring it to a repair shop.

Re: HP dv9700z Keyboard Help

I don't really know many people who know much of anything in regards to computers. I did think about removing the key cap next to it, however, I was afraid I would be doing more harm than good as you already stated (don't know if I would be able to get the cap back on since I don't have any experience with actually assembling a keyboard so to speak). Thank you for your help/advice. It is very much appreciated :).

Re: HP dv9700z Keyboard Help

Just replace the keyboard and be done with it. They cost less than $30 usually and in most cases it is a simple 5-15 minute procedure.
