T42 freezes when moved or bumped

Hi,

I have a T42 that works fine if I have it on a table, but if I pick it up, accidentally bump it or the table, it freezes. I have to do a hard reboot. Some times I have to wait 20 or 30 seconds after the hard shutdown to start it up again. I'm running Windows XP.

I've run a bunch of the diagnostic tests that are on it and they show no problems. Windows Event Manager doesn't show anything either.

I'm at a lost for what to do now to trouble shoot or solve this. Any tips or suggestions? I'm not sure what could have broken. I know the laptop usually have a motion detector to avoid disk write errors, but I'm not sure what could break with that or how I can tell if mine is overly sensitive.

Thanks,
Don

Re: T42 freezes when moved or bumped

Hi Don,

Try with a live CD (i.e. Knoppix and Ubuntu). Btw remove your HDD to be sure then simulate the 'bump' or movement that would make it freeze in Windows. If it continues to freeze then I suspect the video card. There is a known T42 series problem with a GPU that needs a reflow. Let's hope it is not your case.

Re: T42 freezes when moved or bumped

Thanks. I'll try knoppix. If its the GPU, what's involved? It's not just tightning something that has become loose? Do you have to replace it?

Thanks again,
Don
