Red Faced [SOLVED] Serious Display Issue with Vista (Business) Laptop

Hi all,

I've got a serious issue with my laptop which has me really over my head now. I've tried everything I thought might fix the issue; which I've explained below.

Issue:

When I first boot up my desktop appears like this (and the BIOS boot screens). Note: Look at the mouse cursor, then look to the right of it.

Image 1

Officially I thought it was a hardware issue, however when I reboot the screen appears normal (and does not change).

Restart from desktop

Image 2

Bare in mind I have tested this with the lid up, and the lid down.

At first I thought I'd try updating my drivers to see if it was a graphic driver issue. This didn't fix it. So I updated the rest including sound driver just in case of any conflicts. Still the same. Updated windows and still the same.

So I searched Google and couldn't find anything with similarities.

So thought I'd try a re format. Formatted and the problem is still occurring. I have used up to date drivers and Vista is very much up to date.

Does this mean it is a hardware issue? Just it is puzzling me as I thought if it was a hardware issue that the problem would be non fixable after rebooting.

It is a Maxdata Eco 4511W (Maxdata are now bust so no support from them).

Specs are as follows:

That is taken from PC Wizard.
I can provide a Dxdiag report if need be. Sorry about the details. Unsure if they were / are needed?

Thanks for any help in advance,
Pete

PS: If can't fix this I'm going to down grade to XP Pro because I have found Vista to be a waste of my time.

Re: Serious Display Issue with Vista (Business) Laptop

Hi,

Have you tried other screen settings (i.e. resolution)?

Also try uninstalling video drivers in Device Manager and any video device driver program in ADD/REMOVE. Reboot and let Windows take over without installing video drivers. Observe if the screen is normal or not.

Post back what happens.

Tried changing resolution before (sorry forgot to say). Still get the same result what ever resolution I run it at.

I uninstalled the driver via Add / Remove (Programs and Features), but after reboot Vista update updated it to the intel 7.14. So disabled internet and uninstalled intel driver again. Got the following from the MS Windows Driver:

Note: These are screenshots, not photos. The screen still looked as it did before with the desktop to the left (bit further this time) and with the fuzzy start menu.

http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t...ay_issue_4.jpg

Failed so went into the device manager and this is the error I got:

http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/t...ay_issue_5.jpg

Really has me puzzled :(

Re: Serious Display Issue with Vista (Business) Laptop

Follow the link below and download the drivers from there:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Prod...=2800&lang=eng

If that does not help, try a different operating system like a linux live CD and see if the screen displays the same (btw, does it work with an external monitor?).

Re: Serious Display Issue with Vista (Business) Laptop

Have already tried the up to date drivers and it didn't fix it. I will try the external monitor thing now and get back to you :) Windows XP Pro will be ordered if this isn't fixed :)

Re: Serious Display Issue with Vista (Business) Laptop

OK, update:

Image 1 = Laptop Monitor with up to date drivers installed (display is still messed)

Image 2 = External 15" monitor with up to date driver (display is completely normal)

Does this mean that it is a laptop monitor / laptop monitor connection problem? Completely unsure.

ADDED 23.39 GMT = PS: Same resolution settings for both monitors.

Re: Serious Display Issue with Vista (Business) Laptop

A few questions...

1. Did the laptop come with Vista or XP (originally)?
2. Have you tried with another operating system (linux live CD)?
3. Have you tried to open up this laptop?

With the drivers current, I can only say it could be the LCD or the connection. I suspect the connection (video cable) only if you have opened it up and may be missed to plug back the cable securely. I suggest you try first with a linux live CD and see if it behaves the same. If it does, then it indeed hardware and possibly LCD.

1) Came with Vista Business 32 bit ... I haven't installed any other OS before

2) Nope. I can try Windows XP Pro? Would this matter?

3) I haven't touched anything at all. Treated it well and complied to instructions such as don't let the lid go more than 130 deg .. I haven't really ever gone beyond 105 deg though.

History:

It had its motherboard replaced about 3 months ago when it couldn't charge at all. Stupid laptop designers .. why put the connection on the MB and not the battery itself? Such a common problem.

Anyways thats about it. I can try installing XP see if it still persists; if not I will have to take it to my local dealer for them to fix it.

I will let you know how I get on with XP Pro.

PS: I haven't used linux before, is it hard to install? :s

I have all the drivers downloaded for XP already :)

I have all the drivers downloaded for XP already :)

Re: Serious Display Issue with Vista (Business) Laptop

OK, I am now running XP on it and the problem still persists. Beginning to look more like a hardware issue :(

Any advice if I can repair it myself (no warranty effected as company went bust lol).

Thanks Pete

Re: Serious Display Issue with Vista (Business) Laptop

If it is working fine on an external monitor then may be it is the LCD. Try to reseat the cables if that helps... but consider LCD replacement.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried any linux live CDs yet? I hope you can try one just to rule out drivers issue or any Windows related issue.

Thanks.

Re: Serious Display Issue with Vista (Business) Laptop

Would need a direct link for the Linux CDs. If thats alright.

Have been doing my own research and as you say I'm going to check the inverter cable then if not that connection problem then it probably is the LCD replacement root.

See the videos on youtube and it looks simply enough to do.

Thanks for the help will keep you updated. Going to stick with XP as it is much faster and more reliable, regardless of how modern vista is, I think it is a waste of anyones time.

With my manufacture not in business how would I go about getting a replacement LCD? Just a query.

A defective inverter or inverter cable would give you a backlight problem (dim screen). If that is something you experience then it is worth taking a look. what I think you should check is the flat/ribbon cable for video. This one attaches the LCD to the motherboard or video card.

See the videos on youtube and it looks simply enough to do.

If you happen open the laptop up (top lid) you will see at the back of the LCD assembly the part number of its manufacturer. As for the linux CD download links, check my sig.

Re: Serious Display Issue with Vista (Business) Laptop

heehee - Thanks for the link ... glad you pointed it out to me.

Haven't had chance to look yet but from watching most of the youtube videos it may well be a case of replacing the LCD if it isn't the video cable (got that mixed up sorry about the incorrect use of terminology).

Thanks again,
Looked at prices for a LCD replacement (about £60) on ebay .. will look at other sites later for cheapest available. Thanks again for the help.

Will update you with the progress. If you like I can keep the pictures on my posts just in case others find this on google and need to see them? What do you think?

Re: Serious Display Issue with Vista (Business) Laptop

Right bud I opened up the laptop (lost the spring to the lock in the process lol) and the connection for the inverter and the video cable are firmly connected.

Took me a while. Booted up and its still the same.

I can do but do you want the Windows XP settings or the intel ones?

Post both if alright with you. That would give us an idea on how it is set up. Also, have you tried a linux live CD yet? I suggest you do this first. This will rule out any settings issues, drivers issues or Windows issues. If it behaves the same in linux, you can safely say you need a new LCD.
