Acer Aspire 5315-2153

Battery refuses to charge from cord after charging to 100%.

I purchased a new batter on eBay, and it still didn't solve my problem.

My sister bought anther Acer laptop, and its cord (it fits) doesn't even work for the laptop. I'm beginning to wonder if its something internally like a software setting or something. It is annoying because the battery has to have around 5% of batter left for it to recharge (when Windows Vista SP1 32Bit) shuts down due to the low batter levels.

What could be wrong with it?

Thanks for the help.

Re: Acer Aspire 5315-2153

Oops made sense till you asked me to clarify. xD

What I mean is that when it charges to 100%, and it goes down, it won't charge. So

Charge Charge Charge Charge 100% (Still plugged in)
100% 80% 60% 20% (Windows still doesn't show it is plugged in), Unplug, re-plugin Still goes down

The only way to get it to re-charge is to have the computer shut down completely.

If that makes anymore sense. :X

Correct. If I let it charge 100%, when it uses power, I can't charge it again until it dies.

Re: Acer Aspire 5315-2153

Hmmm that is strange because AFAIK it should not drain while the laptop is in use as long as the AC adapter is plugged in the whole time. Unless of course the AC adapter is also malfunctioning or is under powered.

Is the battery you are using original/genuine ACER battery?

Re: Acer Aspire 5315-2153

It occurred with the original battery even. It could be very well the charger as when the charger gets really warm, it makes a high pitched sound. However, even using a charger from another Acer laptop however, doesn't charge after it is charged to 100%.

So I honestly have no idea what it could be.

Re: Acer Aspire 5315-2153

Is the adapter from another ACER laptop exactly the same as your adapter (voltage output, current(Amps) output, etc.)?

Ok, I just looked at the chargers, and they are the same charger. So what could that mean?

Re: Acer Aspire 5315-2153

So with a similar adapter from another ACER laptop the behavior of the battery is the same (charges to 100% but drains out even with the adapter plugged in the wall outlet)? Do you still get the high pitched noise with this 'other' adapter? If so then it could be something in your motherboard... a malfunctioning dc input connector (dc jack).

This may sound far fetched but howabout trying a linux live CD (i.e. Ubuntu or Knoppix) and observe if the battery behaves the same.

Kindly post exact model of ACER laptop that you are having problems with. Thanks

Yea with the other Acer Charger (same charger model) does the same as using the one that came with the laptop.

A motherboard issue sounds like a bad thing S:

I don't know if this makes any difference, but I can use the adapter without the battery in with no interruptions.

I'll try using a Live CD and see if there is any difference. However, I noticed that even with the laptop off, the led light indicator shuts off a few minutes after charging to green which I believe means that the battery stops charging?

The laptop model is in the title:
Acer Aspire 5315-2153.
Model Number: ICL 50 (according to the bottom)
This is honestly wierd and confusing to me. I appreciate the help thus far. :)

Thanks!

Right. A motherboard issue wouldn't be easy or cheap to fix... would it? :\

I mean when I power the laptop off completely and charge it, it'll charge to 100%, and light up green (the led indicator). Then after a few minutes, it acts as if it isn't plugged in/charging.

So I'm not 100% sure it could be an os thing, meaning you may be right about the motherboard thing :\

No problem. I'm helping you help me ;)

Anyway, no it doesn't discharge when off and plugged in, it just stops charging entirely whereas (I believe) it should at least show the green led for as long as its plugged in.

Re: Acer Aspire 5315-2153

Oh ok, I think I got what you are trying to tell us now... (sorry, a bit slow here...).

Just to clarify, how do you know that it stops charging entirely (i.e. battery LED changed color from green to amber or battery LED turned OFF even with AC still plugged in)?

So far here is how I understand what happens:

1. Laptop is OFF but AC is plugged in.
2. Battery is fully charged (LED shows green).
3. Battery LED is ON and shows green (fully charged)
4. Battery LED is ON but changed color (from green to amber/orange)

In my case (battery is a year old), it remains green all the time unless I unplug from AC (battery led turns OFF when unplugged from AC).

Re: Acer Aspire 5315-2153

Partly correct,

1. Laptop is OFF but AC is plugged in.
2. Battery is charging (LED shows orange).
3. Battery LED is ON and shows green (fully charged)
4. Laptop is still OFF
5. Battery LED turns off completely as if nothing is going on.
