is the dvd rom bad?

OK so my DVD rom just stopped working the other day. It about a year old and I don’t think it should go out that fast. However, it is dell and I’m not having much luck with them, I will never buy dell again. I thought that maybe it had to missing a driver so I went online to update it and it was up to date. It says it is working fine but still won’t read any disks. I went out and brought an external DVD but it is doing the something the DVD rom is doing. I’m lost yet again on this laptop and need help. Thanks!
p.s.- it is running vista

You put the disk in the green light will flash a few times and then... nothing. The laptop says it works but it does not it also says it is up to date on the drivers. You know when you go into my computer you can see the DVD rom where the OS is well it does not come up there at all. The rom will open just fine and spit out the disks just fine it just will not play them.

Look in Device Manager to see if it is listed there under CD/DVD drives

yes it is and says it is working properly

Then, if it will not read any cd or dvd, it has failed and will have to be replaced
