compaq presario V5000

I have a compaq presario V5000. The usb ports stoped working one day. And now it want boot up. IT get to the part where it checks the keyboard but it says that something it wrong with the keyboard. I have put a new one it and it does the same thing. Is the mother board go bad or what. Any help please.

I actually troubleshooted a laptop before with similar symptoms and the problem turned out to be a defective motherboard. Do you have warranty on that laptop?

No it does not. Thats was what I thought was going to be the problem. This is the first laptop I have worked on. I didnt know if they are the same or close to the same as a desktop.. So only thing I should have to do is replace the motherboard and that should fix it right. Thanks
