inspiron 1501 booting issues

So my friends laptop was running slow with vista, i downgraded to xpsp2 and was installing drivers.. everything working just fine... even had a game of solitaire and surfed the web

i ran the bios update utility downloaded via dells website, and it hung at a dos window forever with no output.. seemed trivial.. no output no damage right? so i closed it out and did a couple other things on the computer

i then attempted to install ati drivers since they were needed and the computer just FROZE... holding the power button down did not shut it off.. i left it alone came back and still couldnt power down the system.. so i unplugged the battery and then the power cord.

when i boot the system i see the cd drive spin up, and the the only notification led that lights up is the circular one for power..

sounds like the bios flash caused some sort of a problem.. where do i go from here?

Re: inspiron 1501 booting issues

unfortunately each brand of laptop has the battery where it is easy to fit for their model
some you can see when you lift the panels on the back
others it is under the keyboard
my lenovo you have to remove the ram and short to solder points

Re: inspiron 1501 booting issues

i took the notebook apart.. i found the large quarter shaped battery and removed it.. is that all that is necessary to properly reset the cmos or is that only part of the solution?

Re: inspiron 1501 booting issues

cmos batts are aprox. tad bit larger than your thumb. the lappys main battery should be removed and ac adaptor unpluged before removing the cmos batt.

Re: inspiron 1501 booting issues

In most cases, if a bios flash went bad on a laptop, only a mobo replacement will resolve the problem. Sorry.
