Dell Inspiron 1525 can't get past desktop

Hi, My daughter has a Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows Vista Home Premium that was new for Christmas so not even a month old. Last night it was working fine, then this morning when she turned it on it came up with the screen that says "windows did not shut down successfully etc etc" then it froze. We ended up having to hold the on/off button down to force it to shut down.
When I started it back up it goes to the screen that asks if you would like to start up in safe mode. When I chose safe mode, it just opens up into normal mode, I tried it a few times, selecting safe mode, safe mode with networking and the last safe mode choice, each time it just opens up in normal mode. It will get as far as the desktop but clicking on the start menu or anything on her desktop does nothing, it wont open anything.
I read in another thread to do ctrl + F11 to open it in recovery mode, but it just goes to the same safe mode screen. I then did F12 and it passed all of the tests. When the tests were done, it went to the Windoes Error Recovery which just has the "windows did not shut down etc etc and offers safe made again which goes nowhere. So I selected normal mode and it comes up on a black and white screen "checking file system on C" "Type of file NTFS" "disc needs to be checked for consistency and then does a CHK DSK where it brought up lots of text as it checked, too much to write down. It then just says "windows has finished checking" and re-starts. It takes ages to restart then goes to the desktop as before where clicking on anythig does nothing.
Does anyone have any clue as to how I can fix this if I can't get in and open anything? My original thought was to do a system restore but can't get that far to even try.
Thanks for your help.

Soulds like she might of aquired a nasty,

Try pressing F8 during boot, choose "last known configuration that worked".
If that does not work boot into safe mode, if it has Vista installed go to command prompt right click, then click on "run as administrator" type sfc /scannow

Re: Dell Inspiron 1525 can't get past desktop

Thanks, I tried doing F8 and last known configuration that worked, but that didn't change anything. So I have just done the command prompt thing. It says "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example c:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
I have no idea what this means, would you know what I should do next? do you think a system restore would do anything? Thanks so much for your help.

Re: Dell Inspiron 1525 can't get past desktop

I wasn't able to turn off the McAfee AV so so I went to the trendmicro page anyway, I started to run the scan but it came up and said installation failed, it seemed to keep running though, the clock was still counting down, but after a minute or two it stopped and didn't go any further. I was doing all of this in safe mode, could this be why? I can't get onto the internet in normal mode.
Now, I have probably done th wring thing, started it back up again and did F8, I noticed the option at the top says "repair my computer" or something like that, so I gave that a go, I selected the top option that said it scams the discs and rapairs any damage. It ran through and restarted but now the screen is just black with nothing on it. So I am guessing I shouldn't have done that!
Are we a lost cause?

Update to this post: we left the screen blank and after about 10 minutes the welcome screen came up. Still unable to click on anything though.

Re: Dell Inspiron 1525 can't get past desktop

We have been trying diffrent things all day to try and fix this problem but are getting nowhere. We are currently attempting to back-up everything from the laptop onto an external hard drive, it seems to be working in safe mode. I noticed a setting on the safe mode screen that says something like reset to Dell factory settings or original configuration, somthing like that anyway. If we did this, do you think it would fix the problem?

If your data is backed up try that can't hurt.
