laptop wont load windows and gives error when using recovery disc

Computer wont get past windows start up screen?
But it won't start up all the way.
Also there are sometimes weird clicks (like it's trying to work...but slightly different. And a beep or a squeel everysooften from where the hard disc is.

It's a toshiba satellite laptop fwiw
windows vista

It says your computer was unable to start. Startup repair is checking for problems. But it goes on and on
and it says attempting repairs

Start up repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

Problem event name. StartuprepairV2
Prob sig 1 atofailover
Ps2. 6.0.6000.16386.6.0.6001.1800
Ps3. 4
Ps4. 65537
Ps5. Unknown

Ps7. 0
Ps8. 3
Ps9. Wrprepair

Os version 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
Locale id. 1033

Diagnosis and repair details says

Root cause found
A recent driver installation or upgrade may be preventing the system from starting.

then later when i went through this again it didnt have the part about a bad driver.

and said root problem unknown.

it wont load in safe mode either.

so i tried to reset it to factory settings off of the Toshiba recovery cd, but it keeps failing.
now it says

BOOTMGR is missing
press ctrl+alt+del to restart

then like an idiot I removed my hard drive to check for physical damage and when I put it back in and hit F2, it didnt see the hard drive.

and now insteal of the
BOOTMGR is missing
press ctrl+alt+del to restart

i just get a single flashing _

Re: laptop wont load windows and gives error when using recovery disc

It sounds like the hard drive is dying or dead, if it's making those weird clicky squeaky noises.

You could try slaving it to another computer to try and salvage anything left on it...

What brand is it? You could try running the maker's diagnostic tests on it to see if its at fault.

Re: laptop wont load windows and gives error when using recovery disc

yeah, im pretty sure its the drive.

at one point when I was trying to restore or repair it said something about errors on the drive.
I assume thats a bad spot

and when i run the recovery disk it will work for a while and the laptop sounds ok, then it will start the funny popping and beep/screech. I assume thats it getting to a bad spot or something.

Its toshiba, nothing fancy just what came with my laptop.

its basically a 200Gig, 2.5 inch hard drive.
the computer is about a year and a half old, maybe a year.

I was thinking about buying this drive for it

I know my laptop has a SATA connection, but I dont know if SATA 3.0Gb/s makes any difference, or what would need to be compatable
