error messages on my hp laptop, no windows media player

Sorry if I am posting in the wrong area, I am quite new to this. Every time I start up my system, after the main windows screen, I am getting this same error message:

ArcCon.ac - Application error
"The application failed to initilize properley(0xc0000005).click on ok to terminate the application"

also if I try to use windows media player I come to the inital stage of installing windows media player 10, when I click on finish I get another error explaining that WMP is not installed properly, asking if I want to install from the Microsoft web site.

I choose yes, folow the steps and get the same error message except the box heading is :

WMPAU.exe - Application error
With the same text as in quotes above.

I am really not knowledgeable about computers and I have tried a few things that forum pages have offered and none have been a fix.

Please offer me something that might actually work at fixiing this.....
