hard drive issssues
ok so my computer had a heart attack today and now it wont boot properly unless it's in safe mode, trying to run chkdsk give me the awesome "not available for raw disks" and i'm dying.
so i checked disk management and it thinks that two halve of my hardrive are ntfs AND fat32... it's a partitioned drive so that does't seem possible to me... any help? oh and system restore doesn't do anything when i click the last "next" button and regcure said it restored to an earlier date, but nothing's better. i got it to run in normal mode for about a minute and it said "hiberful.sys is corrupted" i think. it was quick, but it was alog those lines. please HELP! thanks Last edited by gnargnar; 01-04-2009 at 04:51 PM. Reason: hiberfile.sys? |

Re: hard drive issssues
ooook so. it ran a chkdsk on c: as long as i didn't ask it to fix or recover anything and it said a bunch of stuff was going to be truncated and asked if i wanted it to turn chains into files and i said no. then i tried to get it to chkdsk and fix on restart and it gave me the raw disc answer again.
i booted it in regular mode and got the blue screen again after about a minute and it said this under "technical info": stop 0x0000008e (0xc0000005, 0xB13EAB3A, 0XAECDE7E8, 0X00000000) wth? thanks |

Re: hard drive issssues
I think 0x8e is a memory access violation if my memory serves me correctly.
In Safe mode, gather up all the files in the directory C:\Windows\minidump. Zip the files into one .zip file and upload it in your next post. Thanks, -Coolfreak |

Re: hard drive issssues
brand- acer
video card- ati mobility radeon x1400 cpu- intel core duo t2300 @1.66Ghz m/board- i can't get my laptop to boot to bios. it pretended to for a second, but then just went past it. i also download "sandra" to find this out, but it can't connect, i'm guessing because my hard drive is fritzy right now? ram- 2gb ddr2 supports dual channels power supply- no name/acer wattage- 19v 4.7a if i uninstall the video card will it keep the drivers? i don't have a disc for that... also, it's been acting weird about displaying the color black for a little bit but i couldn't find anything on-line referencing that problem. it slows down if there's a lot of black on screen, and sometimes it displays weird colors and such instead of black in some of the pixels. that makes me think it may indeed be a video card problem EXCEPT it's having serious problems with the hdd. |

Re: hard drive issssues
ok so a couple new developments
when i boot to safe mode i have to press esc to keep it from loading "SPTD.EXE" or it just sits there. also i accidentally loaded it in regular mode while trying to get to the bios and it says "windows\prefetch\imscinst.exe-2b626103.pf" is corrupt. i tried pressing ctrl+alt+del+esc to get to bios and it kind of loaded something similar but i have to hold those keys to get it to stay on the screen, and it doesn't really give me the info i'm looking for and it started motherboard-beeping and restarted if i held it too long. sigh |

Re: hard drive issssues
sorry! i'm dumb. i can connect a tv via s-video cable? i might be able to take the monitor from this computer i'm on, but i don't know if it has the right connections at the moment, and it's a bit hard to look under the desk with a broken clavicle. i found out SPTD.EXE is assosciated with daemon tools, which i have, so i'm going to uninstall that in a minute and try to delete that other corrupted sys file.

Re: hard drive issssues
if it runs normal in safe mode it would indicate software or driver
in msconfig disable[untick boxes] of anything you don't need on startup then try normal mode

Re: hard drive issssues
That could be the problem, as that may sound like a video problem. When I get home, I will look into the mini dump files for you.

Re: hard drive issssues
well after the avast! scan (which found about two pages worth of problems) it booted to normal mode and i still got a message saying i had a corrupt and unreadable file, followed by the blue screen of death. i then booted it in safe mode, and tried msconfig, but it doesn't seem to actually list everything that runs on start up. i've been trying since long before this to get that under control because my computer routinely runs around 70 processes, but msconfig listed around 20-25. i've been loading safe mode as administrator instead of my normal profile so i'll try it in my normal profile today.
looking forward to the results of the minidump thanks again |

Re: hard drive issssues
well i loaded it in safe mode under my normal account right now, and if i try to access the C: drive it says "the file resycled\boot.com is corrupt" and wont open it. but it opens the c just fine under admin. and i can open files that are on the c through shortcuts and programs and such so the drive isn't wrecked. i searched for resycled\boot.com and it doesn't show up. so it's definitely a software problem, and it's definitely a virus i'd say, but i don't know what to do. is it time to format and re-up windows?

Re: hard drive issssues
Well, you could try a reinstall of Windows, I wouldn't jump to a format and starting fresh, at this point.

Re: hard drive issssues
I believe all the recovery options provided in the thread dai provided will not delete any of your data.
