Angry Gateway laptop MT6728 Power adapter problems

Here's the situation:

My wife and I bought a MT6728 laptop from Gateway. After half a year the power adapter it came with is broken (the connector to the laptop is bent and the metal casing broke off).

The Specs for it are:
Input: 100-240V ~ 1.5A(1.5A) 50-60HZ
Output: 19V === 3.42A(3.42A) no wattage listed

A replacement costs ~80$ from the Gateway site, so I found a 30$ one from Ebay. It's a LITEON Adapter from Toshiba.

The spec on THAT one are:
Input: 100-240V ~ 1.6A(1.6A) 50-60HZ
Output: 19V === 3.42A(3.42A) 65W

I plug in the new adapter, the light on the adapter is lit up fine, but no power is getting to the Laptop. As far as I know there are no changes to the power settings on the laptop through Vista. The connector fits snugly into the port. From all visual aspects it looks like it works, except that it's not charging. Suffice to say, I'm stumped.

Ask answers/advice would be appreciated. thankyou.
