Weird laptop problems after drop....
I have a Gateway MX6440 notebook and i use it, well.....useD it alot for graphic design work... one day i had it in my bag on my shoulder and it slipped off and fell straight down perpendicular with the ground.... it seemed to be ok but the next time i went to charge it, the charge light on front would come on, then go off, then back on... completely intermittent not a blink... when i turn the laptop on it comes on and posts fine, loads windows fine and i can move around and then it just shuts off like you pulled the plug. Its not my battery as it does it without the batt and its not the adapter, tried another...same prob... it doesnt shut off at the same spot, once again completely intermittent. Out of warranty so i took it apart and got all the way to the motherboard and nothing looked broke, burned, or out of place.. Motherboard??? Hard Drive??? CPU??? ugh

Re: Weird laptop problems after drop....
If it's just shutting off, it's probably not your hard drive. Since it charges intermittently it sounds like it isn't charging your battery and not effectively powering the laptop. So I'm saying it's the dc-jack. Which can be part of the motherboard, but sometimes it's a separate part. Either way, you dropped it and you're having problems that don't really point to a part other than the board. Even if you replace the dc-in jack, there might be mini-fractures on the board which can cause havoc with integrated circuits. I'd pull the hard drive, back up the data, and sell it on ebay for parts.
