OBIT for a laptop?

My Laptop Won't Turn On or Charge

the other day i was online and using my laptop (dell inspiron series 15-something, about 5 years old) when all of the sudden the screen went black and it totally shut off... no warning... no battery light warning (it was fully charged and plugged in)... no proper shut down... just off! and now days later it still won't turn on! no response when pressing the power button. the charge indicator light is non-responsive as well, as the laptop is always plugged in. i did get a notice a few days prior that the virtual memory was low, however when i check the memory on the hard drive, it was plenty free. i wonder if that was a virus?

is my laptop dead? i let my warranty/tech support contract run out.

if it is dead, is there any way of retrieving my documents, etc.?
