[SOLVED] CD-Rom/DVD Driver help?
Hi everyone,
My CD/DVD driver isn't working correctly. I have a Toshiba A-75 S206 laptop, Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed. I can't play CDs when they're inserted into my laptop; I can't even use the driver CD I have with my laptop, since it won't show up in My Computer or anywhere when a CD is in. When a CD is inserted, it spins and the light blinks -- it seems like it's going to work and then, nothing loads/nothing happens. I went into System under Control Panel > Hardware > Device Manager - under the CD/DVD Drives, there is an exclamation point next to the driver. When I click on the Properties, it says that it's not working correctly -- it won't let me update it and I'm not sure if I should try rolling it back to another one. I can't seem to find information on this specific driver anywhere or what to do about this problem; I've Googled and nothing's been terribly useful. The Microsoft site seems to be of no help, either. I'll have more specifics about the driver when I'm on my own computer, but if anyone can help me out before I have that information, that'd be great. Thank you very much for any help/leads on fixing this! :) |

Re: CD-Rom/DVD Driver help?
Go ahead and try a rollback. If that fails, make sure you install all windows updates, then, while online, tell it to update the driver, but let xp search for the driver. If that fails, uninstall the cd driver from device manager, reboot, then go through the add hardware wizard. Again, let xp search for the driver online.

Re: CD-Rom/DVD Driver help?
I update my computer quite regularly, so I'm pretty sure all my Windows updates are current/installed, but I'll definitely check. Assuming nothing else works and I uninstall the driver, wouldn't I need to have access to the driver in order to use the Add Hardware wizard? I can't find the driver anywhere in the first place.
Thanks for the advice, though -- I'm going to try it :) |

Re: CD-Rom/DVD Driver help?
Not if it pulls the driver down from the internet. I had a somewhat similar issue in Vista, but with an ethernet controller (I'm one of those who wipes/reloads every 6 mos or so, but will probably not be doing that in Vista again). Even downloading the driver from Nvidia's site and installing it didn't work. Allowing windows to search for the driver online didn't work. I went ahead an did a windows update (even though I had already done one). It pulled down an update, then when I went through the add hardware wizard, suddenly it found the correct driver and installed it.

Re: CD-Rom/DVD Driver help?
Hm...well, I tried rolling the driver back and a message came up saying it can't be rolled back because there isn't a previous one.
I also tried searching for it, and nothing could be found. The only thing Windows update is showing me is updating to SP3 and I don't want Service Pack 3 installed on my laptop. According to Device Manager, the driver is: HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4243N. I don't know exactly if that is useful. Also, under Properties, it says Driver Provider: Microsoft / Driver Date: 7-1-2001 / Driver Version:5.1.2535.0 / Driver Signer: Microsoft Windows Publisher. Then, it also says - Manufacturer: Standard CD-ROM drives. I'm not sure where I can locate this driver, now. |

Re: CD-Rom/DVD Driver help?
Hm, I tried the program and it says it can't open/download at this time. Also, those problems seem to apply to Code 31. In Device Manager, it says: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
If I can get the program to work later, I'll try again. |

Re: CD-Rom/DVD Driver help?
You do not need to download anything. You can use the advance trouble shooting to manually delete the filters. Just be carefull and follow the directions exactly.

Re: CD-Rom/DVD Driver help?
If I receive an error message after editing the registry, and I want to revert back to the previous registry (after saving a log file of the registry), how would I go back? I don't want to screw anything else up after deleting the upper/lower filters, so I want to make sure I know how to get it back.
Thank you. I'll let you know this afternoon if that works once I'm back on my own computer. |

Re: CD-Rom/DVD Driver help?
Deleting the upper/lower filters seemed to work. Thanks!
And whoever moved this, can you please let me know, in the future, if you're moving a post? (I spent a lot of anxious minutes wondering if someone deleted my post.)
