HP Pavillion DV8000 intermittent failure

I saw a great thread on this, but it is closed. Hopefully some that posted on that thread will be able to answer.

One of the solutions seemed to be reapplying Arctic Silver to the heat sink and possibly the processor.

First, I am going to open and clean it, and make sure there are no dust bunnies in there, but I expect that it will continue.

I went to the Arctic silver site, and it talked about the stuff not being an adhesive, while that thread seemed to be talking about using it as a thermal connector AND adhesive (hold down the sink???).

Can anyone expand on this for me, I'd sure appreciate it.

As per Arctic silver site, you need a thin layer of thermal compound but if your heatsink/heatspreader has a thin gap from the CPU no matter how you tighten the screws, then you should consider using thermal pads.

Can anyone expand on this for me, I'd sure appreciate it.
