[SOLVED] Laptop screeches deafeningly at start-up
![]() I tried starting my laptop in the normal way and as it began to load Windows as usual, it suddenly began to emit the most horrifying continuous screeching noise and windows stopped loading. I switched off. I have tried starting it up three times and it happens every time, although windows seems to get a bit further with loading, each time I try. Any suggestions? Or is this terminal. Please help me. Laptop is running xp pro, not vista Last edited by Lynpy; 12-17-2008 at 05:40 PM. |

Re: Laptop screeches deafeningly at start-up
Have you tried booting a live CD like Knoppix or Ubuntu or BartPE XP? Try either one of these and observe if you get the same symptoms.

Not being sure how to go about that which you have suggested this is how things went.
I downloaded (to a CD) (using a different computer) the third programme suggested and started the laptop to get the CD tray open, whilst tapping F8, which led me to the page which lets me start in safe mode. I started and loaded windows in safe mode, which offered the chance to 'system restore'. This I tried, this did not work, it could not restore to a previous date. I put the CD in and attempted to start windows normally rather than 'safe mode'. The screeching sound returned part way through the loading of windows, however I don't think the CD played any part - I wasn't actually booting from the CD, I cannot remember how to get to the window that let's me change the boot order or is there another way? It appears that I can work in safe mode only at present. I have gone into safe mode again and at present my security programme (Trend Micro Pc-cillin) is scanning the laptop. What next and how please? Thanks in advance, keep thinking positive...................... Last edited by Lynpy; 12-18-2008 at 05:00 PM. |

Re: Laptop screeches deafeningly at start-up
I understand you have Knoppix or Ubuntu in a CD now.. is this correct? If so put that in your CD drive and boot the laptop. Go into BIOS settings or in the BOOT Menu and select to boot from the CD/DVD drive.
Btw, I believe you downloaded Knoppix or Ubuntu ISO file. With an ISO file you need Nero or ImgBurn or similar programs to burn the image into a CD. Copying the ISO file directly into a CD will not make you a bootable CD.

Re: Laptop screeches deafeningly at start-up
I made the BartPe XP boot cd (pebuilder3110a) by downloading to the desktop, installing to an external hard drive and then burnt it to a CD from there. Was that the correct way to do it?
I tapped F2 whilst starting the laptop and changed the boot order so that it would boot from the CD. I tried to boot from the CD but the laptop would not boot from there. Have I made the CD incorrectly? I can still work in Safe mode. It screeches if I try to start normally or even starting with a last configuration when it was working ok. Trend Micro Pc-cilling in safe mode 'passed' the memory but reported errors on most every other line as it checked the C drive, I didn't wait for it to complete the scan. The events log shows errors..........errors......................errors In Safe mode I can see my documents etc. are still there. I'm wading through treacle (a steep learning curve indeed). I am such a novice. |

Re: Laptop screeches deafeningly at start-up
I think BartPE creates an ISO file. You will need Nero or ImgBurn (free) to burn the ISO image into a blank CD. If you just copied it directly to the blank CD that would not make the CD bootable.
Looks like you indeed have problems with the HDD. Have you ran any other diagnostics to test the hard drive? Get your HDD brand and use its diagnostic tool (see HDD Diags link on my sig to d/load the right tool). Assuming this is a hard drive problem, try to save your important files from the hard drive if you still can.

Re: Laptop screeches deafeningly at start-up
A friend sucessfully built the BartPE CD for me and I have booted from the CD (with no screeching problems). I am running the Bart stuff test, I have no idea what this will tell me and advice would be much appreciated.

Re: Laptop screeches deafeningly at start-up
BartPE - I did a disc check and repair with this CD and the laptop appears to be fixed............
I changed the boot order back to normal and Windows now loads normally with no rude noises, so thanks for your help and the introduction to BartPE.

Re: Laptop screeches deafeningly at start-up
If you have any data you cherish, be sure to back it up . . that hard drive may be failing. You can download diagnosticsfrom the manufacturer to rule that out.
