CD/DVD Combo failure

Good morning,
I have a Toshiba Satellite 5000-204. Whilst using the recovery disc I received a message "Failed to extract" On closing down and trying to boot up I received the Message "Insert System Disc" This I did but found that the CD/DVD Combo had failed.
I removed the CD drive which was a UJDA720, I ordered replacement but the supplier sent a UJDA710 and I was told that this drive is compatable.
I installed the UJDA710 but it will still not boot up and gives the message "Insert System Disc" whicH still will not boot up.can anybody help?

Re: CD/DVD Combo failure

Does your BIOS detect the "new" CD-ROM?
Is the CD-ROM set to boot first in the BIOS?

Re: CD/DVD Combo failure

Go into the BIOS and set the Boot Priority to boot from CD-Rom first.
Insert your CD into the CD-rom and reboot the computer.
See if this will start your recovery option.
What is the EXACT make and model of this Toshiba the info should be on a tag on the computer.

Re: CD/DVD Combo failure

The Laptop is a Toshiba Satellite 5000-204.
I have changed the BOIS to boot from CD.
I put in the Disc 1 of the recovery which works, and when finished it asks for Disc 2. I put in Disc 2 and it works till about 95% when the the screen goes black with a message !!!!!!ERROR!!!!!!! "Extraction Failed"
Can anyone tell me what either I or the computer is doing wrong.
Thanks for any help you may give

Re: CD/DVD Combo failure

Hi,
If the first CD of your recovery disk worked then your CD-Rom is OK.
It could be that the second CD has an issue.
Is the CD scratched or dirty? If scratched try burning a new CD to see if it burns without errors.
Other possible reasons could be faulty Ram or Harddrive
To test the RAM use Memtest under my signature.
To test the harddrive use the Manaufactures Harddrive Diagnostics Utility:
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287#maxtor
Note: Toshiba itself does not have HD Diagnostics, but Hitachi/IBM may work
Thanks,
Bill

Re: CD/DVD Combo failure

I cannot do any of the ram or hdd tests because the computer will not boot up.
As I mentioned the first recovery disc was OK but the second did not complete.
I made a new Disc 2 but still it will not accept it and will now not even start or go as far as 95% as previously.
I am at a loss to know what to do next.
Because the computer will not boot up it is impossible for me to do other than keep trying the recovery discs which seems futile.

Re: CD/DVD Combo failure

Hi,
The test I wish for you to perform does not require you to boot the PC to Windows
If you boot up the PC with the test disc in your CD-Rom the test will run. They do not require Windows or any other OS to run.
If you are able to access the BIOS and the PC does POST these test will work.

I am thinking you have a Hardware issue somewhere. This maybe why the recovery CD is failing.
What happened that caused this issue to begin with?
Did you have a Virus/BSOD or other issues?

Thanks,
Bill
