[SOLVED] Trying to install XP, might need a driver for the hard drive

Hi
I believe this is the right forum for this problem, if it is not feel free to move it.

I recently purchased one of these systems:
http://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/sy...r_X5-5900_Note

With the intention of installing XP on it (dual booted with ubuntu).
First of all i installed ubuntu, then i used the partition manager to create a separate partition of free space for XP. I popped in the XP CD, it went through the usual starting process, until at the bottom it said 'starting windows' then i got a type of BSOD, saying windows had to shut down so as not to cause damage to the computer. Then it asked if i had installed any new hardware recently, then advising me to check for viruses (on an OS that wasen't even installed yet), recommending i did F check disk, and something else about the hard drive i don't remember. I tried as again with anther XP CD with the same thing happening.

It didn't specifically say i needed to get a driver for XP.
But i remember when i installed XP on a previous computer it needed to have a driver for the Hard drive slip streamed in before it wouldn't detect the hard drive. I was hoping someone could help me find out if i need to do a similar thing now, and if so help me locate the driver.

Hi Falc,
The link you posted is invalid.
Can you supply another link or give us the make and model of this computer?
Bill

Re: Trying to install XP, might need a driver for the hard drive

Hi,

You have an Intel Mobile PM45 chipset
Your Specs are here:
http://www.compal.com/index_En.htm

Select: Products and services
Select: Notebooks
Select: Product specs
Select: Your notebook JHL90 Series

If you do not have the option in your BIOS to disable AHCI you may need this driver (Slipstreamed to your XP disc if you do not have a floppy drive). I do not know the effects if you do change this option seeing you have ubuntu installed already, so you may wish not to check this option.

Intel Matrix Storage: Floppy (F6)
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...ition&lang=eng

Read Me file:
http://downloadmirror.intel.com/17059/eng/readme.txt

The rest of your drivers are here, but Compal is ONLY supporting VISTA and not XP, so you may have issues with finding ALL the drivers.
http://www.compal.com/asp/driver_dnd/index.htm
Select: Downloads
Select: Drivers
Select: JHL90

How to Slipstream:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windo...-installation/

Hope this helps.
Bill

Re: Trying to install XP, might need a driver for the hard drive

Okay thanks i'll be able try that in a few days once i have a windows computer around to run nlite on. Unless i can try to get the old crappy one i have working
Here are the other recommendations i get on the BSOD just in case its important
1. Viruses
2. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers
3. Check hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated
4. Run CHKSK /F to check for hard drive corription, and then restart your computer

Re: Trying to install XP, might need a driver for the hard drive

I think the error is caused by XP not seeing your HD correctly:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103
It maybe due to the ubuntu that is installed (windows only likes ITS OS and wants to OVERITE it), but I think seeing you are installing XP on the seperate partition it is looking for the SATA drivers (F6) install.

Let us know how you make out.

Re: Trying to install XP, might need a driver for the hard drive

I am trying to get the inf files from the intel matrix storage manager driver you posted.
However i can't seem to extract it on any of the computers i have at my disposal. The ones at university, the older XP desktop upstairs, and running under Wine on this laptop al give me the message: Hardware does not meet the minimum requirements. Is there annother way to get the inf from the download?

Re: Trying to install XP, might need a driver for the hard drive

Hi,
I am sorry I gave you the whole utility and not the driver
This is the one you want:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...ition&lang=eng

This is a ZIP folder.
Extract these files to a folder.
Slipstream the folder to you CD as per Nlite.
