Both LCD screen & external monitor not working -all black on VGN-N250E

Is this a video card problem or battery/power problem?
I have a Sony Vaio laptop VGN-N250E running Vista.
Without any changes having been made recently, my LCD screen went black. I've restarted many times and initially thought it was not booting up at all but it actually is (I can see the blinking lights and hear the HD spinning) but only when plugged into ac outlet. It does NOT seem to boot with the battery only, tough it did before. I tried several external monitors but none seem to receive any message from the laptop.
A thousand kudos and blessings to any one who can please help.

shine a torch on the screen and see if you can pick anything up
if you can it is probably the backlight gone
if not it might be the video chip or card
if it is a chip you have a problem

There is no sign of pixel activity detectable on the LCD.
Is there a way to troubleshoot for anything else?

did you switch to the external monitor by using the keys on the k/board
