[SOLVED] Laptop is a lot better now.
I just did a total format and re installation of XP. I had some sort of bug that I could not get rid of, (words lagging key strokes).
Anyway its finally fixed. Files lost but thats ok, I can live with that. The only thing I am still showing that isn't 100% correct is when I go to hardware in Device manager it shows the yellow ? under "other devices" and Base system device, PCI Device and SM Bus Controller are in the drop down menu and have yellow ? next to them. I tried to download the drivers going through Device manager but as I don't have the drivers cd I get nothing. I am not sure what these items control but the laptop seems to be in good health, other than random disconnects from the internet. I am not sure if that is because of those above items or something else. Any ideas? |

Re: Laptop is a lot better now.
yes, those devices are really important- to have best performance and reliability- those are the stuff that you must have- it kinda sucks tho, because i have got that problem on my self-built pc too. but anyway, if the pc/laptop is not a self-built, then you to the manufacuring website and download all the drivers from which you need. in my experience, SM Bus Controller has something to do whith your processor chip- for instance, my is Intel chipset- and in went in to Intel website and search for sm bus controller- for instance, i download a file called infinst_autol_smbus controller.zip from their web. for the PCI device, it has to be with your audio and vedio drivers - in which you can easily get the drivers for that from the manufature website.
hope this help Regards Phi |

Re: Laptop is a lot better now.
Uggg, actually a few minutes after posting the above yesterday it started AGAIN!!! I was about to throw the laptop out the window. Everything had been tried at my level.
Was going to bring it to a repair shop but they wanted 150.00 or so to even check it out and troubleshoot the problem. We have a few computer guys at work, so I brought it to work yesterday to one of our resident "geeks". He worked it for the whole shift, in between fixing jets. To make a long story short, and after checking everything again, including the mechanical connections, he figured it out. It wound up being a "hot key" buried under something in my ATI video hardware driver. It took him a long time to troubleshoot it, but its been since last night and she is typing and posting on the screen at the same time. Thanks for your help everyone, especially you Michael. |
