No display on boot up

I don't have a great understanding of computers so you'll have to excuse me. I have a HP laptop running Windows Vista (it's only about a year old but I don't know part names/models, sorry).

When I boot it up no display comes up on the screen, although the computer lights are on (back light doesn't seem to be on though). It isn't making any noise like it would when it normally boots windows. I can't even seem to access system restore or safe mode. Any idea what might be the problem?

do you have an external monitor that you can hook up to it and see if that works?

Just tried that and I'm getting no signal to the monitor.
