Laptop Shutoff - HP Pavilion zd7000
A new riddle I hope someone could fiddle with!
My laptop, a ~4 year old, 3.06GHz with XP and Service Pack 3, started shutting off suddenly yesterday. Nothing new had been installed. Once Windows has started up, the next shut off is seconds away, if it has a chance to finish starting up at all. This will happen in safe mode too, and it definitely will shut off before a virus check program can get going. After shutting off, even the charging and power lights go out for ten or twenty seconds, then it can be restarted. But only with the power cord plugged in. If unplugged, the battery charge icon flashes for a second, then goes dark again. So it will not start with just the battery. With the battery removed, it won't turn on at all either. Once I've waited long enough, I can restart the computer with the power plugged in and press F5, F8 etc., and it will never shut off as long as that startup menu is displayed, only after it boots up more. I have a wooden AND an aluminum baseball bat. Do I need either yet?? Chris |

Re: Laptop Shutoff - HP Pavilion zd7000
Hi Chris,
I am guessing your battery do not hold charge anymore considering they 4 years old... thus no power using battery alone. As for the ac adapter, it can power ON but shuts down immediately. Have you tried reseating the RAM? Also if you have a working spare RAM module use it for testing purposes... Btw, can you at least go into BIOS settings? Additionally try to run HDD hardware diagnostic. See HDD Diags link on my sig and d/load the one for your HDD brand. Get the ISO file so you can create a bootable CD. That way, you do not need to install it and run the diagnostic in Windows. Do tell us what happens?

Re: Laptop Shutoff - HP Pavilion zd7000
Thank you for the advice! Actually the battery still holds a charge, and strangely enough, the pc made it all the way through starting up yesterday finally without shutting down. I ran my usual Ad-Aware 2008 and Advanced WindowsCare without shutting down either and am hoping it was just a strange weekend for it. No idea yet if it might happen again someday...
