Mistake HP Pavilion dv5000 - Running Slower - Sound Sucks

Hello Everyone!

Just about a week or so ago my computer went haywire and slowed up a ton and the sound playback skips and just generally sucks. At first i thought malware but i've run multiple scans with my Symantec AV and I did an online scan with Kaspersky - Nothing was found.

I did a disk cleanup, deleted about 20GBs of files that were old/I didn't want or need (the hard drive Was getting a bit full - only about 5GB free space but now it has about 25GB of free space). I updated all my drivers, did the HP online diagnostics, etc. Everything has come back fine.

It seems like something keeps hogging up the CPU intermittently, I've tried shutting down unnecessary processes that hog CPU usage but still it stays slow, sometimes it's alright, but most of the time it's slow. And the sound still sucks no matter what on playback, and i've tried using different media players - even system sounds skip!

So here's my HijackThis log and system details, and hopefully someone can help me figure out what's going on here.

Thanks a bunch!

Check for overheating... just a wild thought but it could cause the symptoms that you described.

Re: HP Pavilion dv5000 - Running Slower - Sound Sucks

Thanks, I downloaded SpeedFan and it appears my Core temp is around 48-51 C when the CPU is idling. I guess that's a little warm but I don't know. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

That is pretty warm indeed. Try cleaning out the vents and see if it improves anything.

Re: HP Pavilion dv5000 - Running Slower - Sound Sucks

for a laptop? nah man thats normal. my dv1000 has been running at 58c for like 3 yrs now. no problems there. i'm guessing you have vista right? preinstalled? if you have that disc that came with the laptop, could you do a fresh install? <edited by TriggerFinger> anyways....goodluck!

Re: HP Pavilion dv5000 - Running Slower - Sound Sucks

So I pulled this monster apart and cleaned out the fan/heatsink but to be honest there wasn't much dust in there at all. The core's running about 1-3 degrees cooler than before but still having all the same problems. I dont think overheating was the problem.

I'm running XP SP3 and factory restoring it is something i'd like to avoid, at least until i get an external hard-drive to backup my files.

This has to be a virus or something that the AV's missing or one cloaking itself as part of the AV suite. The CPU usage is through the roof and minor tasks that barely affected the speed of the computer a few weeks ago are now taking forever and consuming so many resources if i run a small program and try to watch/listen to music or video at the same time the sound/video/both skips horribly. I cant stream video or music from the internet because the loading of the content takes up too many resources so the video skips and wont play normally until everything's loaded - and like i said, only if NO other programs are running.

Any ideas anyone? If you need another HiJackThis log lemme know.

Thanks so much!

PS - I tried running an Ubuntu LiveCD just to see if it was the OS or the Computer and everything works fine with the liveCD, so it's definitely a software issue.

Re: HP Pavilion dv5000 - Running Slower - Sound Sucks

Oh and a few days ago it started giving me random BSOD's claiming page fault errors but they flash too quickly for me to write down the hex#. I dont know what triggers them they just randomly go.

A few things that might help if you try them...
  1. Try the online scanners like Kaspersky or Panda. They may help identify an infection.
  2. Run Memtest86+ to test your RAM. D/load link on my sig.
  3. Run an HDD diagnostic like Hitachi Drive Fitness Test (if you are using Hitachi/IBM drives). D/load link on my sig. Get the one for your HDD brand.

Re: HP Pavilion dv5000 - Running Slower - Sound Sucks

Okay... So the Kaspersky scan came back clean, the Panda scan came back (essentially) clean as well (some cookies, no malware).

I ran the memtest86+ for the last 13 hours or so and got A Lot of errors (on pass 11 i was up to 3700 or so). They all seemed to follow this pattern:

Test Pass Failing Addr Good Bad Err. Bits Count
==== === =============== ========= ======== ======== ====
6 9 000aaa30cc 170.1MB 00080000 000c0000 00040000 2985
5 10 0000aaa30c8 170.1MB 00100000 00140000 00040000 3305
5 10 0000aaa38c8 170.1MB 00080000 000c0000 00040000 3306
5 10 0000baa38a8 186.1MB 00080000 000c0000 00040000 3307

And that pretty much just repeated, most of the numbers staying the same (except the pass #).

So does this mean my RAM just suddenly died and needs to be replaced?

And the HDD test passed just fine.

Thanks!

Yes in a way it is telling you that your RAM is defective... but which one? If you have 2 RAM modules installed, you need to run them one at a time in Memtest86+ to know exactly which one is failing.

Re: HP Pavilion dv5000 - Running Slower - Sound Sucks

Alright so i ran the test on each stick and found the defective one. I'll replace that asap, and hopefully that will fix the problem. Thanks for your help! Also, i still think part of this might be software related - such as my drivers. Are there any programs which check to make sure your drivers are installed correctly/aren't corrupted?

Thanks again!

Try the Device Manager. Make sure you do not have yellow or ! marks on any of the devices. That would give you an idea if you have the correct drivers.

As for the RAM, replace it first... and run the applications which you had problems before (see your first post in this thread).

I am currently experiencing the exact same problems on a customers dv5000. In addition to the problems previously stated above, this machine will not execute dos based programs contained on diagnostic cd's. I have new RAM on the way.

What I meant to ask DougD720 was is his machine is able to run DOS programs from his cd rom. Not trying to hijack his thread, just thought we could benefit from the mutual information here. Sorry, guess I will start my own thread.
