Re: Compaq CQ50-210US Drivers for XP?

It's crazy how many HP laptop users want to go back to XP. It's bad business for HP to not support it; I mean even if they sold their notebooks for a higher price with XP than Vista (like up to $50 bucks more), I think people would still buy it.

BTW congrats on loading XP on the SATA drive. Out of curiosity, what method did you use? (BIOS to get SATA to act like PATA? nLite to slipstream SATA drivers? USB floppy?)

Anyway, for the drivers, the only ones provided for XP are the quicklaunch button.

For graphics you seem to have an NVIDIA GeForce 8200M. Try this driver:
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers/xp/176.48

For audio you'll need to upgrade to service pack 3 first (if you're still using sp1 or sp2, get this patch from microsoft first: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111 (click on view and request hotfix download)). Then try this driver:
http://members.driverguide.com/drive...action=summary
(thanks to momomo for finding that one)

For the modem, you'll need the same patches as for audio. The driver is here
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...reg_R1002_USEN

For wireless you'll have to find out whether you use a broadcom or an atheros card.

Haven't found the chipset, usb card reader, nor touchpad drivers yet, but this should be enough to get you started for now.

Re: Compaq CQ50-210US Drivers for XP?

Thanks for the quick reply, I have an Atheros card (spent 2 hours uninstalling things in Vista before deciding to go to XP)

I'll need to get on to the internet first to download SP2 and SP3 for XP...

as to how I loaded XP, I have free XP from my school, i just put it in and formatted and installed like any regular computer.. so for any of those advance methods you listed, i'm glad i didn't have to deal with any of that =D

I only need the basics, I was thinking GFX, chipset, sound, modem, ethernet, audio and other essential drivers that I might have missed. I do not do anything advance on my computer at all, thanks!

PS: HP sucks for not listing XP drivers, they should know everyone still loves XP, my main reason for the downgrade is because this laptop plays games worse than my 3 year old laptop (because of vista). Old laptop = 1.6 pentium M, ati x300 mobility (can't even display pictures on NBA 2k9, that's how old it is!)

Re: Compaq CQ50-210US Drivers for XP?

I forgot to mention, you can also use unknown device identifier to identify your devices with missing drivers
http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html

For the Atheros: go to this site http://www.atheros.cz/
then using what you found using UDI above, match up the driver you need.

If you don't mind I'll paste your PM. I'd start a new thread but I don't want to like take charge for it...

Not sure about the system restore mechanism via F11...
According to this thread
http://www.hp2133guide.com/forums/vi...dea19bacfb0dba
the recovery partition has to have the label HP_RECOVERY. Open My Computer. Is D: named HP_RECOVERY? If not, right click it, and enter the name at the very top. Then try rebooting and pressing F11 again.

Just to cover the obvious - did your PC come with recovery CD's or DVD's? You can just do a recovery using them too.

Out of curiosity, what did you dislike about XP?

Re: Compaq CQ50-210US Drivers for XP?

trying to return this laptop, i think it's messed up, obviously this cpu/ram/gfx is better than my 3 year old dell yet my 3 year old dell plays L4D better than this laptop. I had the latest drivers and all and it didnt work.

my D drive is PRESARIO_RP which is the same thing rebooting and pressing f11 yields no results, it completely ignores that button and continues to load up XP..

no recover cd, its just from the partition.

before i formatted to XP, (when I had vista) i tried the function and it worked, now it doesn't prompt anything.

EDIT: tried renaming to HP_RECOVERY, didn't work.

Re: Compaq CQ50-210US Drivers for XP?

Ah, if it was just slow performance you should have said that! You can turn off superfetch, system restore, windows defender auto-scan, and the page file and it'll make your system much faster. Also you should check if your game requires DirectX 10. That's only available for Vista (it would be trivial for Microsoft to port it to XP, but they're trying to force everyone to use Vista).

You should start a new thread entitled "F11 for restore doesn't work on HP laptop" then point to this thread. I'm wondering if XP may have modified something in the MBR (master boot record), preventing F11 from starting. You can also fiddle in the BIOS and see if there are other menus that let you access system restore. Other than that, I think you may simply have to order a restore DVD from HP (they don't cost much - you have to give them info like what laptop you bought, or your customer ID or something).

Re: Compaq CQ50-210US Drivers for XP?

Guess the reason why I don't want to pay about 20 bucks for the CD is because I just got the laptop 2 days ago and I don't want to keep this laptop, thanks for your help.

If you look up above, you will see a SEARCH button. Type your make/model number in there. The answer has been given before.
