cd/dvd rom drive not working?

hi,
im tryin to fix someones toshiba laptop.
the cd/dvd rom drive is not working...or is now not even recognized?
if i put a disc in, it'll spin but thats it.
in windows media player (with a music cd in), i'll press burn it''ll read "a cd drive is needed".
in device manager its not there.
the laptops not even saying "new hardware found" or "there is problem with this hardware".
How do I even find out how to get the right driver for it? (or even if the driver is ok?)

Looks like the CD drive is toast. Have you tried a known working unit just to isolate if it is indeed driver related or hardware?

Hi,
Uninstall the CD-rom drivers and reboot the Laptop. Xp should reinstall the drivers
Then try to clean the Upper/Lower Filters:
