Acer Aspire screen problem

I have an ACER Aspire 5100 laptop and the screen has gone blank. I can see the screen by attaching a monitor and if you press the button that gets pressed when the laptop lid is closed the screen appears briefly before going blank again.
Can anyone suggest what might be the problem and any resolution?

Hi Jo,

Can you at least see the icons in the dark background of the LCD? My guess is the inverter but I am not so sure unless tested.

Yes, in a bright light you can just about see the icons are there. What can I do if it is the inverter?
