Red Distortion on screen

Hi all,
My laptop (a Dell Inspiron 1501) has somehow encountered a strange problem. There is a red bar (2 inches wide) that runs vertically down the middle of my screen. It isn't fully red, but anything on that part of screen either turns a red color, or gets distorted. I have ruled out a graphic driver problem, since I reinstalled my drivers and it did not work. I am thinking it is a hardware problem. The thing is, it just appeared yesterday, for no apparent reason. Does anyone have any ideas what it is? Thanks for you help.

sounds like a problem with the video chip or a ban connection
is it uder warranty
