Compaq nx9010 attached monitor failed...

Hi, I'm running a Compaq nx9010 laptop with XP and for the past several days have been using a dock with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse hooked up to it. It has not been used since I was on last night, nor has it been onlineand when I booted up this evening after work it showed the windows load screen on my external monitor (acer AL1912) but then went blank and I haven't been able to get it back. I went to the acer website to download the specific driver for said monitor, I've rebooted several times and nothing. When I boot up that useful indicator light on the acer does go from orange to green, but only for a little bit, nothing shows on the screen. Keyboard and mouse still working fine, as is the dock so I'm a bit lost. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Compaq nx9010 attached monitor failed...

I've since hooked up a second lcd acer monitor, and this one isn't working either but it again is showing that the monitor is running, it says 'Power Saving Mode' so yeah. Seems pretty clear it something on the laptop end...please help lol.

Are the monitors connected to the dock or directly to the laptop? Try connecting to the laptop directly and remove laptop from dock. Boot into BIOS settings only. If it works in BIOS settings then it could be the driver. Btw, does your laptop LCD screen still works?

Re: Compaq nx9010 attached monitor failed...

Hey thanks for taking an interest in my problem trigger. Yes I have tried it without the dock aswell as with...I did manage to get them working for a little bit lol, but they stopped again. I ran system restore to the day before it stopped working and that got it going for a bit. I then tried setting it up as a second monitor, instead of simply having my primary desktop on both the laptop monitor and the attached LCD. I managed to get that working for a bit, but when I tried to set it back the other way, I got a massive fail. Now it's back to not working at all. The light on the LCD still turns green as the laptop boots up but nothing showing. And yes, the LCD on the laptop itself hasn't stopped working.

Re: Compaq nx9010 attached monitor failed...

I have seen in some laptops that you can set in BIOS which one you will use by default during POST... LCD, CRT or BOTH. Check that value if you have it in your BIOS settings.

When you go into BIOS or boot into BIOS settings, do you see anything on the external monitor? I ask because the way I understand your problem is that you do not get anything on the external monitor when you are in Windows. If that is exactly your case, it could be a drivers issue.

Re: Compaq nx9010 attached monitor failed...

I have looked thru the bios and no luck. Here comes the interesting part, I have managed to get it working...sort of...
If I boot up the comp without the monitor attached...then plug the monitor into the wall, and THEN plug it into the laptop it works. Provided I don't try to adjust any settings, or be in a DOS type program(not running in a window) and press the windows key...all of those things mess it up, it then either goes blank or shifts over to being monitor 2.
