Please help buyin a new lap top COMPUTER ILLERATE !!!

Hello, as you can see I am new to this forum. I really need to invest in a new laptop. I do not know much about computers so please help me. It would be greatly appreciated. I will follow the suggest points and put my answers after them. Thanks again

1. Budget: How much money are you willing to spend on the laptop?

I am willing to spend around 800 -1100 but willing to be felxable.

2. Screen: What size screen do you want, and do you need widescreen?

I am not really sure what screen size I want, but I do not want it to be really small, but not too expensive bec/ it is large

3. Brands: Are there any brands you want or don't want to buy?

Like I said before I do not know really much about computers so I am not sure

4. Mobility: How much will you need and how long does the battery need to last?

Not sure about this, but maybe an hour or so nothing special?

5. Durability: Does this laptop need to be sturdy or durable/semi-durable?

I would like the laptop to be sturdy/ durable so it can last a long time

6. Multitasking: Will you be multitasking with this laptop and if so, how much?

Yes, I will be multitasking a ton. I like to run a lot of programs at once. I especially run a lot of online poker programs and alot of internet explorer/ firefox pages at once.

7. Gaming: Will you be gaming and if so, how much and how new are the games?

Not really a gamer

8. Calculations: Will you be doing any intense calculations or multimedia encoding?

Umm I do not think so

9. Storage: How much storage will you need and what will you be storing?

I am computer illiterate, So i am not sure. I save a word documents.

10. Optical Media: Will you need to burn any optical media like CDs or DVDs?

sure that would be a nice feature, but if it adds alot more to the price then I do not need it.

11. Operating System: Do you want Windows XP or Vista, or Linux compatibility?

I am guessing Vista is the newest so that one, unless there have been problems

12. Location: What country do you live in?

USA

Just a couple more questions that I thought of myself:

1) What type of warranty should I be looking for? In terms of years and price
2) Is there anywhere that I can look for coupons or "deals"?
3) should I wait till x mas time to buy a lap top, or after, or buy it now there wont be much of a difference.

Thanks for all the help I really appreciate it.

Re: Please help buyin a new lap top COMPUTER ILLERATE !!!

with regard to screen size, mine is 15.4" and I find that adequate for what I want to do, I certainly would not want a smaller screen. You may prefer a bigger screen if you want to watch a lot of films. re battery, one hour isn't really a long time, you should find a laptop with a battery that lasts longer than that. I would think you'll find that these days hard drives in laptops have plenty of storage space, and they all seem to come with DVD RW so that won't put the price up. As well as the other suggestions, have a look at the Dell site. HTH
