Unmountable_boot_volume

Hi
i have Toshiba A100 Satellite pro which is about 2-2½ years old. It recently gave me a blue error screen when i tried to start it up. I have been reading alot about the error message "Unmountable_boot_volume".

I have tried to fix it with the chkdsk command. i tried to boot it with the recovery CD from Toshiba which is used to reinstall the whole computer.

I boot my computer with the CD press "f12" under start up. And chooses to boot from CD then it starts loading RAMDISK image as it normally does when using the recovery CD but when that is finished i get a dos prompt. CMD.exe or startnet.cmd. the name of the window is:"X:\i386\system32\cmd.exe - startnet.cmd. I imagine that this is the dos prompt that i should be getting to fix the error with the chkdsk command. But i can't type in one word in the dos prompt (if it is a dos prompt). Also i think it is wired that the name of the drive is X:
Look at the attached photo.

And also i didnt do anything to get the dos prompt open, i didnt press "r" or anything as recommanded other places. I also cant use the recovery CD to reinstall my whole computer.

I am thinking that my harddrive is dead and i need to get a new one?
or is the recovery CD from toshiba that cant be used for this task?

and other little thing. When its nearly finished with loading the ramdisk image it gives me the opportunity to press "f6" "if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver. i have tried to press "f6" too. Its all included in the pictures

Thank you in advance for your help

Re: Unmountable_boot_volume

If you suspect HDD failure, run HDD diagnostic like Hitachi Drive Fitness Test (see HDD Diags link on my sig). If errors show, consider replacement.

Re: Unmountable_boot_volume

the laptop is a "Toshiba satellite PRO A100" that is no other numbers. model no. "PSAA3E-00300EED. I know there is multiple models of the satellite pro A100 series, but i am pretty sure that there also is a model that is called just A100. Atleast it doesnt say any more on the back of my laptop.

-Tripperfinger : sorry i am a newcomer here, what is your "sig"?

thanks for the help so far.

Re: Unmountable_boot_volume

i followed the link now but it states that: "Toshiba does not provide diagnostic tools for hard drives, currently."

Is it possible to use the software utility from another manufacteur on my toshiba hard drive?

Re: Unmountable_boot_volume

Hi

I tried to burn the ISO file unto an empty CD, but the computer dosent recognize it. When i press "f12" during start-op I get the screen with the 4 different boot options, and i choose boot from CD-ROM, but then it just goes black for a while and i get back to the screen with different start options, like safe mode, normal mode etc. and after that i get the blue screen again.

I found out that i might be able to use hitachi too, but the only ones that had worked only on hard drives with a capacity of 500 GB or more.

If i just buy a new toshiba hard drive, my computer will work at once after i installed windows. I mean the error message "unmountable_boot_volume" thats something with the hard drive rigth, i wouldnt get that again if I got a new hard drive?

Thank you again.

Re: Unmountable_boot_volume

Use NERO or IMGBURN (see my sig for d/load site) to burn ISO files into CD. Copying them directly to a blank media is not the correct way for ISO files.
