Re: my laptop hangs after hibernation

Do you mean during going into hibernation or when trying to resume after hibernation? How much RAM do you have and how big a harddisk?

I have found that you can only hibernate so many times before you must totally shutdown and restart Windows. And after running some applications you will have trouble hibernating just once or twice.

This is because (in my opinion or guessing) memory (RAM) gets fragmented during normal operation of starting and stopping programs and this causes trouble trying to hibernate. The more RAM you have (suggest 500 MB minimum, 1 GB or more is best), the more often you can hibernate successfully.

You could also have a very fragmented or full hard disk so run DEFRAG if you haven't lately.

Re: my laptop hangs after hibernation

If the laptop used to resume from hibernation without problems earlier, and this is just a recent problem, then it could be due to disk issues like fragmentation, or corruption in the hibernation file.

First, run chkdsk /r at the command prompt to eliminate file system errors. A reboot maybe required.

Run a disk cleanup to get rid of junk files, and run a proper defrag. Use a powerful defragmenter like Diskeeper 2008 Pro to defrag the disk. You can grab free trial versions from http://www.diskeeper.com for the job. It's an awesome program for defragmenting hard drives.

Also, it would be a good idea to disable hibernation before the defrag, so the hibernation file is deleted and then re-enable it after the defrag to create a new hiber file. This will allow defrag to run smoothly and thoroughly.

Thanks for your suggestions about trial version of Diskkeeper and to disable Hibernate.
