computer locks when booting

Need help!
I am using a Thinkpad 600 Pent 2 with win 98se. My problem is it will not boot entirely.
It just locks and i cannot do anything. When it locks I have to remove the power source to reboot. Sometime it gives me an error message # 127??
I tried use a boot disk. Sometime it locks and other times it will boot but when I try to use the option on the boot disk it locks and i have to reboot.
At times I can reboot and reach the safe mode but it locks and i cannot go any further. On occasion windows will run but then it locks.
Any suggestions?

When the computer locks I can not download anything. The computer does have a diognostic utility that I can access and it says the hard drive is fine. Any other suggestion?

searching the problem only comes up with the 127 error being related to when upgrading the cpu to a p3
check for a bios update

I did find new IBM bios for this computer but how do I install them if the system keeps locking?
