Using Windows XP for Dell desktop on laptop?

Hello,
I'm new to the forum, so please forgive me if this is posted in the wrong place. I've been using an Acer Travelmate 2310 series laptop with Windows XP on it, but it's been infected with a virus I can't remove and running very slowly. I need to reformat but using Alt+F10 upon startup does not work, and I did not recieve a Acer recovery/system reinstall disc. I'm wondering if I would be able to use an OS reinstall disc I have from my Dell desktop (also XP) on my laptop?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
