comp starts, lights flash, shut down

I use a dell inspiron 6000 with windows xp. When I try to start it the lights flash on for about 6 seconds and then shuts off Because I can turn it on I can't or don't know how to run a diagnostic.

Secondly, if this is a motherboard or some other large problem, can I still transfer files off my C drive.

Thanks,

wjh

i think you can only get back ur data if you got the laptop turned on. but since it's not, and i don't have an answer for why, but if you want to stransfer files off ur c:\ then go to http://www.cmsproducts.com/notebook_drive_removal.htm and see Inspiron 6000 and XPS Gen 2 under Dell. take out the hard drive.
