Toshiba Satellite

My daughter gave me a toshiba satellite, but I can't get it to work with
dial-up. I plug in the phone line & it kills the line & then says there's no
dial tone. If I call my phone I get a busy signal. Help!!!

What are you using to dial-up?

What does 'it kills the line' mean?

A little more info on what steps you have taken to use the modem might be helpful.
