Compaq Presario hangs at boot stage

Hi.

I've a compaq presario v5000 which for some time now has been hanging on bootup. When you switch it on, it will occassionaly boot, but mostly just freezes. All you get is a black screen, and the sound of the hdd spinning.

I've researched the problem, and the concensus out there tends towards loose / faulty memory modules. However, I've refitted the memory modules a couple of times, and run the memtest86+ iso cd and it gave the memory a clean bill of health. The only other information I can supply is that the cooling fan shoots out a whoosh of air on bootup, and then stops (normal enough I think).

Also, immediately after completing a single pass of memtest86+, the machine froze upon reboot. Doesn't make any sense to me that the memory would be at fault there.

Could this be an overheating issue? (Although I don't suspect so since the fan fires up at every boot stage). I've checked for viruses and malware, and besides, it won't even let a boot cd work. Is there anything else I can try?

All help much appreciated.

Thanks.

Try a new/good/working RAM. Remove the ones installed. If symptoms persist, check for overheating. Clean the fan/heatsink areas. Remove any obstructions including dust. If you have removed the heatsink from the CPU core, reapply thermal paiste.

Re: Compaq Presario hangs at boot stage

If possible boot to the Bios and run a Hard disk check. If the H/D check runs and results in a #7 then the H/D is slightly flaky. A way around this is to repartition to two parts.
Finally, if the above happens and your still under warrenty send it back. MY son had the same prob and the H/d was replaced.

Re: Compaq Presario hangs at boot stage

Thanks to all for the replies. I will look into these as possible solutions. I have a hunch now that the cpu may be overheating (as well?), so I'll post my findings in a couple of days to close this one out.

Regards.

Re: Compaq Presario hangs at boot stage

Folks. Thanks again for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I'm not getting anywhere. I've disassembled the laptop, cleaned the cpu / heatsink, and reapplied thermal paste. Checked the hdd also. No joy. Still getting the same symptoms. Machine boots only when cold, but not if it's been working within the past minute or 2. Any other ideas what this might be?

Thanks.

Re: Compaq Presario hangs at boot stage

I am having a simular problem, however the laptop doen't freeze up, it is just real damn slow at bootup, i have looked into this and one of our local techies suggested to go too the AMD website as this is the processor that this laptop has in it, i was told that some of them have this freeze/ slow boot problem, he suggested further, that a friend of his had this same problem and was solved by going to the AMD website as there is a new updated driver/program that will likley solve the problem, i did go there and sure enough there it was, i downloaded it and it solved the problem, that was after i done the same cleaning and changing out the ram, It is a processor upate, http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/..._11687,00.html, the update is driver version 1.3.2.0053, i hope this helps out for ya's as it has help make a big differece in how this laptop runs. Take care... ;}
