Lost sound with Acer Laptop

I have an Acer Aspire 3003WLMi, bought in 2005 and the operating system is Win XP prof.. Suddenly I lost all sound,. A sales person from Staples with some tech experience, checked it out and concluded that "it must be the motherboard". Is this a common problem with Acer? What would it cost to replace and who should I see?
Thanks for any assistance you may provide!

Re: Lost sound with Acer Laptop

Have you reinstalled sound/audio drivers? What is the status in Device Manager? Also, have you tried linux live CD (Knoppix or Ubuntu)?

If it works in linux live CD then it is NOT the motherboard. If it does not, then it could be hardware (i.e. motherboard, sound/audio board, speakers, etc.).

Re: Lost sound with Acer Laptop

Thanks, TRIGGERFINGER for suggesting remedies for my "lost sound". I reinstalled the audio driver and had sound to announce I have mail-ONCE then no more sound. I went to a video on a sports page and received the picture, but no sound.
As I am a "rookie w/ computers" I am now about to ask some dumb questions:
1. Where do I find my device manager....on EManager?
2. I googled Linux and found Knoppix 5.3.1 for $9.95, I think? Am I to assume that if I buy this software, install it, it will diagnose and repair my problem?
3. Yesterday, I bought a subscription with Driver Detective and it found some driver and software errors. One was the audio driver. I dowloaded RealTk AC97, but am unable to install it. Their drctions are in audio format and their written directions are "over my head"...

1. Where do I find my device manager....on EManager? -- Device Manager is under Control Panel - System
2. I googled Linux and found Knoppix 5.3.1 for $9.95, I think? Am I to assume that if I buy this software, install it, it will diagnose and repair my problem? -- these are free to download. Google the download site. No need to buy.
