Toshiba shuts off with no warning
A friend has a Toshiba P105-S6227 running Vista home Prem. The problem is that the machine shuts off with no warning. I will run in safe mode with networking and does not shut down. The shut downs do not seem to have a pattern, it may run for an hour or only 5 min. As it does not shut down in safe mode we thought it might be a driver but after updating all of them the problem is still there.

Have you checked for overheating?

Re: Toshiba shuts off with no warning
yes it says it is running about110 F, but it never shuts down in safe mode that is why I thought it was a corrupt driver, as all of them do not load in safe mode.

Re: Toshiba shuts off with no warning
It looks like temp is OK at 43 C / 110 F. Try repair of Windows:

Re: Toshiba shuts off with no warning
We did a repair using her toshiba disks but nothing happened to change anything. Going to try the same with a retail version. Also when going to safe mode, there is no boot to last known good configuration we did try to use the Vista restore option but it said it did not change anything. Will be talking to her in an hour or so and attempt the above and get back. I run XP so I'm not the best one to be helping her with Vista, and we are doing it over the phone so I can not even see her screens.

Re: Toshiba shuts off with no warning
Oh so sorry all this time I thought it was XP. If it is Vista, try Startup Repair first. Also just to rule out HDD hard drive, run HDD diags.

Re: Toshiba shuts off with no warning
Ok here is what we did, we removed the display adapter thinking that when we rebooted it would find new hardware and we could then point it at the new drivers we had downloaded for her GeForce 7600 adapter. When it rebooted it did find the display adapter but installed the standard windows adapter driver, everything seems to be right with the display and we have run the machine for several hours without a shut down. I can only believe the driver or the card itself was not right, as Vista did not see it as the GeForce card maybe the card has a problem who knows. The bottom line is that it is running correctly at this point she will test it doing the things she does all the time and see if it holds up. We are kind of leery about installing the new drivers at this time but I think we should just as a test.

Re: Toshiba shuts off with no warning
Let's hope for the best. Honestly I am quite skeptical of the video drivers or video card being the cause of the shutdown but then again, let us wait and see and hope that it resolves the problem.

Re: Toshiba shuts off with no warning
When this first started she got an error log that had a number on it that I did a google on and it said it was the video driver, but that was about an XP machine not a vista one so I discounted it. Today I got desperate and decided to just do the test with the display adapter / driver and so far it seems to have worked. Seems way too simple for something that took this long so I agree with you that it may not be the real problem. Will keep track of it and let you know.

Re: Toshiba shuts off with no warning
Went to toshiba site again, and downloaded and installed the driver for the display adapter it is running now and the machine has not shut down yet. If it runs the rest of the night we are going to put sp1 back on the machine to see if it was the problem.

Re: Toshiba shuts off with no warning
If that works and system is stable, it could mean you got corrupt drivers before. keep us posted what happens

Re: Toshiba shuts off with no warning
System seems to be running OK now, after we loaded the new drivers and it did not shut down we installed SP1 again and it is still working without shut downs will monitor it and if anything changes will let you know. One note after putting SP1 back on we could not get online the firewall was not letting us out, (Bitdefeder) removed it and put zone alarm on and is working now.
