cant connect to wireless gateway wVista sp1

hello.
i have a dell 1425 laptop with vista home premium sp1. when i first received it it connectly immediately to my wireless home network. at that time the network consisted of a dsl modem, wireless router and a dell b130 laptop with xp home basic sp2. about 3 months later we lost the internet connection, wired and wireless. after troubleshooting, i decided i needed a new modem. so i called verizon and purchased an Actiontec GT704-WG wirless gateway. the xp computer connected perfectly but the vista computer connected only with the ethernet cable. i've completed chat and sharing sessions with verizon support. the gateway was working properly. they referred me to dell support. i've completed chats and sharing sessions with them also and they claimed it was a configuration problem between the gateway and the vista computer which only their network support (dell on call)specialists could fix for a nominal fee. before contacting them, i tried numerous attempts at resolving this problem using recommendations from the dell support and microsoft support knowledge databases, chat rooms, and forums including restoring my software to original factory status, and uninstalling, reinstalling and updating my driver software. i finally bit the bullet, called dell, paid the fee and did the chat and sharing session with them. the tech repeated all the other previous attempts at resolution only to announce that all he could figure out was that the gateway was not broadcasting strongly enough for the vista computer to connect. the wireless network appeared in the list of available networks but the connection was never completed when i clicked on it. the tech suggested that since i'd had success with the prior network setup, i should return the gateway and just buy a new modem and set up my network as it was before. as you can guess i'm totally frustrated. its been 4 and 1/2 weeks and i still don't have a wireless connection on my vista computer. any comments, recommendations, or suggestions you may offer i would greatly appreciate. thanks so much for your time.
