dell inspiron 8500 sound issues

I have the newest drivers for the sound according to windows updates and dells support site. I just formatted and i don't know if the sound worked pre format.

I get sound, but it's distorted. I can't get any app to play anything, the only thing that will do anything is the sound profiles, where you can test what sound you'd like to apply to what.

I've tried the onboard speakers, speakers and headphones, it's always the same sound.

Help :(

I also have no 'windows default' option for sound devices.

Just sigmatel audio. the drivers from dells support site.

Do you get the same distorted sound when for instance you are listening to an audio file over the internet? Also have you tried it with another operating system (i.e. Knoppix or Ubuntu live CD)?

If sound is distorted using linux then it could be your sound card.
