Mother board of not? HP Dv2310us

Hi, my first post and its a big problem, well my cousin gave me my HP DV2310us back and when I got it back it turned on and all but I didnt know the password, well since then I shut it down. When I went back to turn it on, The screen doesn't turn on, some times if i restart I would get the back light but thats all. Now it doesnt even have the back light, It does however power all the lights and fan comes on and all just no screen. My mother's friend had looked at it and said it was the motherboard that crapped out on me. Does anyone know if this is true? Thanks
