Laptop keyboard and mouse do not work!

I have a 2 year old Acer Aspire S100 running on Windows XP, service pack 2. It has virtually been trouble free since I got it, at least until now.
Yesterday when I was going to use the laptop, which sat idling at home, the mouse pointer didn't move and none of the keyboard buttons had any effect. The screen had gotten darker which it does when the computer hasn't been in use for a little while.
I restarted using the power button (which incidentally is the only button working), the computer rebooted with the screen dimmed as before and again, nothing worked.

I've restarted many times and it's always the same, I can't even access the bios because there is no response to F2 during bootup.

I'd appreciate any help!

Re: Laptop keyboard and mouse do not work!

May I ask the the mods to move this thread to the laptop support forum please. I suspect it might be better suited there.

So you mean after the reboot, Windows started normally but your mouse and keyboard do not work? Clarification.. mouse means touchpad?

Re: Laptop keyboard and mouse do not work!

(Sorry, my bad) Yes that's correct, there is no response from the keyboard or the touchpad, even after countless re-boots. I can't even do system restore during start -up because, as said before the buttons don't work. I don't mind reformatting it, I'm not sure how it's possible under these conditions... Could this be a virus?

Re: Laptop keyboard and mouse do not work!

Can you still enter into BIOS settings? Keyboard should work in BIOS (this is out of Windows already so we will know if it is drivers/Windows or software related. The downside is you cannot test your touchpad.

Another way is to boot using a linux live CD. Try Knoppix or Ubuntu... either way you can test your keyboard and the touchpad.

Re: Laptop keyboard and mouse do not work!

Thanks for your reply.
The problem is that I can't access the bios settings, there is no response to F2, therefore I can't change the boot sequence resulting in that I can't boot from the dvd rom.
(Alt-F9 for restore or F2 for bios settings during start do not work.....)

Re: Laptop keyboard and mouse do not work!

Some laptops work with an external keyboard. Have you tried using one just to check. If external keyboard works, consider replacing keyboard or check connections for keyboard and touchpad.
