Cannot recover HP laptop

I have a HP Pavilion dv9008nr media center edition laptop. It's always had some strange problems, mainly with the drivers, but recently it just went haywire when I tried fixing a sound driver problem. The sound is fixed but it quit starting, and Data Execution prevention kept shutting down all programs including explorer, and all services causing automatic shutdowns and blue screens. I managed to shut off DEP but I can't access the recovery program from windows. Nor can I create recovery CD's/DVD's, the process fails every time. When I tried hitting F10 (repeatedly) at the HP screen for a non-windows recovery I don't get a recovery screen but just a BIOS settings screen. I really just want to reset to factory conditions, and I know I have a recovery partition, so how do I do it? I don't have any OS discs or anything so a format isn't really preferable.. please help.

Re: Cannot recover HP laptop

This may help you:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...name=c00608578
You need to tap F11 to get the HP PC Recovery
I would recommend reading the link as you may loose all your Data.

If you have had issues this may apply:

Re: Cannot recover HP laptop

Ok thanks I tried tapping F11 and it did something, but then I got struck by the blue screen of death! I did back up all my data so I'm not worried about files. What I AM worried about is my OS because I have no discs. How can I get back my original OS/factory settings?? Recovery is getting the blue death and in windows its getting equivalent error messages. What left is there to do except re-format and scrounge up an OS from some pirate website..

Re: Cannot recover HP laptop

Please do not anything about Pirated sites. TSF does not condone use of these options

As far as a recovery disk set you can always contact HP for the disk.

The issue of a BSOD concerns me.
Can you post the entire error message.
Did you check to see if your model applies fir the recall?

Re: Cannot recover HP laptop

I checked those links too, the first link, all those solutions fail for me. I can't access the pc recovery program or disc creation from windows or from F11 or whatever. I don't have recovery CD's and I can't even send for them now because that part of the HP site is under maintanence. I can't even re-format because it uses the same recovery program that fails. I do have some of those issues that the second link provided, but my regular warranty is out and I'll do that if/when/ever I fix this current problem, so thanks for that at least.

Re: Cannot recover HP laptop

If you are getting BSOD you may not get this issue resolved with or without the disk or PC recovery.
Can you post the BSOD Error?
We need to determine what it is and if it is related.

Re: Cannot recover HP laptop

Yeah sorry didn't get the first message.

HEre's the exact quote from the blue screen, as follows:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}

The windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000080 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

Re: Cannot recover HP laptop

Did you have Norton System works on this PC?
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316503&sd=RMVP

This may also help:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;156669

Are you able to get into SAFE MODE or select LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION
Tap the F8 key at bootup and see if you can get into SAFE MODE.

Re: Cannot recover HP laptop

No I don't have anything to do with Norton and I've never heard of the GoBack program. And yeah I can boot, because I turned off DEP for explorer, so safe mode, last known conf. and regular boot will now get me to explorer but most of my programs crash when I try to run anything except windows media player. Isn't there a way to recover from cmd or something.. that's all I want to do now is a clean restart.. this stuff is just too much trouble.

Re: Cannot recover HP laptop

Attempt to restore the PC using System Restore:
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System tools>System Restore
Go back to a date to when the PC was running normally.
(Turn on DEP as this protects windows OS)

Re: Cannot recover HP laptop

I restored it to an earlier point before I posted here unfortunately. I didn't turn off DEP I just made it make an exception for explorer and msconfig so I could do the initial system restore. Is it possible to just format my hard drive and then attempt to restore from the HP logo(F11) to access my recovery partition afterwards?

Re: Cannot recover HP laptop

No,
I do not think that will work.
Your error code points to a hardware issue (corrupt drivers or failing hardware some where along the lines). The BSOD you get when you run the HP PC Recovery tells me this is more of a hardware issue than software, seeing the HP PC recovery partition should not be corrupted.

What issues were you experiencing before?
You stated driver issues, but was not specific.
Without getting into the mainboard I would:
Reseat the RAM
Test the RAM using Memtest86. (A link is under my signature)
Enter the BIOS and set it to the default setting.
Disconnect any external perivials you may have.
Check the harddrive using the Manufacture's Diagnostic utility and Windows Check disk utility. If no errors, try HP PC Recovery again.
If this does not work then I would see if it is covered under the warranty:
