Problems with fresh install

I am working on a Averatec C3500 tablet. I did a fresh install of the OS. I updated all of the drivers ( I think). Updated to sp3. Now two items are not working right.

1. usb port when I plug in a flash drive or ext. cd drive it locks up computer.
2. internial cd/dvd does not see mfg disks. I have run audio disk that are home made. but the install disks for office or any other program or audio disks are not seen by cd reader.

I do not know if I need different driver or firmware. lost as to where to try to fix problems.

Any help would be appreciated

Re: Problems with fresh install

Was not sure how to edit my post but have been able to play a video dvd with power dvd. I do not understand why the drive will not see Office install disk or any install app cd?

Re: Problems with fresh install

Test your optical drive in another laptop or by using an external enclosure or adapter. If it works well in another computer then it could be your drivers

Re: Problems with fresh install

go to driveragent.com to check drivers, if it says your fine then hook what you can up to another set to test.

Re: Problems with fresh install

Thanks for the reply. I will visit driver and see what happens. I do think it may be driver but little support for the tablet PC and drivers.

Re: Problems with fresh install

Ok did a scan of drivers and it looks like the main driver not updated is 5.1.2600.5512 it looks like this is a sp3 driver. I have installed sp 3 but maybe it did not go in right. Should I reinstall sp3 and if so what kind of problems would I have.

Thanks IceMeister

Re: Problems with fresh install

Have you tried booting a live CD like Knoppix or Ubuntu? If the drive works, then it could be your SP3.

Btw, optical drives (AFAIK) do not need drivers in XP.

The drive works fine as long as the cd/dvd has a boot file on it. I have tried a couple of boot utilities and the drive opens them up fine to read the files. If not boot file the the drive can not see it. I am working on updating the drivers by each MFG. SIS is a big one 5 drivers to update.
Will post when I am done and see if everything works.

Re: Problems with fresh install

Have you tried deleting the upper and lower limits? Try CDGONE.REG (Google for the download site).

After spending several hours with microsoft nothing they tried worked. They deleted upper and lower, tossed a bunch of other files. loaded a fix and still cd/dvd player not working. Last attempt was to uninstall Roxio 6 and reinstall. Before i did this i went to roxio looking for a fix for this problem. Found a couple of thing to try and still not go. So have uninstalled Roxio and tried to reinstall and got error. Now I have posted the error in there forums and will see what happens. I am supposed to have a nother chat this evening with microsoft. we will see what happens.

Thanks again for all of the suggestions.

IceMeister

P.S. I will post an update later.

Re: Problems with fresh install

just a follow up on fixing the tablet. After many hours of working on this problem. I found that the error log had a suggested fix. It was that a cable could have gone bad between the dvd player and mother board. No cable was found and i replaced the drive with one from a computer i had built and all worked well. I do not know if the drive is bad but did not want to take the laptop apart twice. will check the drive at some point.

I did spend a lot of time with microsucks who never ask to check the log file to see what the error was. now at least I know how to do that.

Thanks for all the help

If I remember it clearly... I already replied to you with something like testing your CD drive in another computer just to know if it is the drive. If you did that then, or if you have tried another drive at that time... Oh well, at least you were able to sort it out.

Yes you did and I always keept it in the back of my mind to try that. Microsoft was so sure that the problem was software related that I went with that until it ran it course. Its also hard to take apart a laptop and this brand was different than the one other laptop I took apart it made me nervous to atempt. I went to a site that listed a bunch of laptop self repairs and got an idea as to what to look for in taking the laptop apart. This off brand had no tech information on it at all.
once again thanks for all of the input on this I did get around to listening to you and you were right.
