Laptop keeps powering off
I have an Acer Aspire 3000 laptop that I use daily, sometimes for hours a day. A month or two ago, it started to turn itself off occasionally, which has grown over time in frequency. I noticed when I use it on a hard surface (rather than on my bedspread, for example), it seems to not happen as frequently, but other than that, I can't seem to figure out any pattern. Without exception, the laptop powers right back up instantly without waiting when I press the power button after one of these power downs. It often requires a "disk check" utility run after a sudden power down of any kind, including these, and sometimes it finds fragments, but often not.
The bottom of the laptop feels hot, but it's always been at least warm, I can't say whether it's warmer than it used to be. Is this just a heat problem, and if so, how do I fix it? I've read about "checking the temperature in BIOS", how do I do that (I'm not laptop savvy)? This has become so common that it's beginning to drive me nuts. Help, anyone? :) |

Re: Laptop keeps powering off
Install and run NHC or Speedfan or similar to check on your temps. Also check your vents, heatsink and fan areas for dust or any obstructions. Clean as needed.

Re: Laptop keeps powering off
also give up putting the laptop straight on the bedspread - this would clog any vents on the bottom of the laptop. If you could buy a "laptray" that would be ok, my relative uses one for his laptop.

Re: Laptop keeps powering off
Yeah, I use a bed tray type thing right now, but that doesn't seem to help at all. I long ago stopped putting it on the bed directly, that does seem to make it happen far more often.
I haven't run the temp utilities yet, but once I do, what do I do with the information? What am I looking for? :) Thanks for your help! :D |

Re: Laptop keeps powering off
If your temps reach like 60degs... you are on the hot side.
