Monitor goes black

My monitor on my Dell 1505 laptop briefly lights and the promptly goes dark. As I close and open the top of the laptop it briefly lights then goes dark.

Re: Monitor goes black

Could be a couple of things. Could be the reed switch flaking out, or could be the LCD backlight (inverter board) flaking out.

When it is "black" can you still see shapes, windows, etc if you look closely in a well-lit area, but it's just really dark, or is it completely BLACK with nothing but blackness as in if you open it and do not turn on the power?

Here is another troubleshooting tip. Plug in an external monitor into the VGA out port on the laptop, hit "Function" plus "CRT/LCD" (normally on the for function keys) a few times until you toggle for BOTH to be be on and then test...

If the LCD goes to black or whatever, but the external stays on like normal, then it's an issue with the LCD. If the external monitor ALSO goes black when the LCD does, then it's the video board on the motherboard :(

Either way, I hope it is under warranty... ...

If it is definitely the LCD only with that symptom, then one thing you might try is popping off the plastics up top as if you were replacing the keyboard, and unplug/reseat the lcd connector cable.

Let me know what you find! :)

Does this happen when you open/close the lid or the same thing happens when you power ON the laptop the first time?

Try either without the battery and or AC adapter plugged in. Also reseat the RAM if possible.
