Cry CD-ROM not responding

Hello.
I have a little problem with my notebook. For some time my CD-ROM refuse to work. When I boot into system everything seems to be ok, CD-ROM led is flashig properly and responding to eject button. Problem comes when I try to use it. System do not "see" it. Not in explorer, not in hadware manager, not at all. I tried to check it in bios, but not even bios can find it.
It happend to me some time ago, but when I reboot everthing comes to normal and work for some time. Then again and again more often. Now I can't use it any more. Any ideas?

HW: Acer Travelmate 5510 original
SW: Win XP home

Re: CD-ROM not responding

Ah. It is called "device manager" not "hardware manager"... Nevermind. I can't uninstal it since it is not listed there. Every singel piece of software I have says same thing - two CD-ROMs found; both virtual (Daemon Tools), none physical.

Re: CD-ROM not responding

did you reboot and check it after uninstalling
uninstall your burning software and reboot and reinstall it
normally i would suggest trying the drive in another computer to check it
but it's a bit difficult with a laptop
it could be a dirty laser
dirty contacts on the back drive
or the drive could have gone
